Defending champions Kabras Sugar started their Kenya Cup defense with a 40-13 win over newly promoted Catholic Monks at the Kakamega Showground on Saturday 26 November 2022.

A Sammy Omollo penalty gave Monks a 3-0 lead after four minutes of play but Patrick Lumumba responded for the champions with Ntabeni Dukisa converting for a 7-3 score before Paul Abuto landed an unconverted try for a 12-3 lead.

Further tries from Jeanson Musoga,  Lumumba and Barry Robinson backed by conversions from Dukisa brought the score to 33-3 at the interval.

Victor Were added the fifth try after the restart with Valerian Tendwa converting for a 40-3 lead before the Monks scored more consolation points through Eric Ogutu who managed a penalty and conversion from Victor Omupere’s try.
