The game of musical chairs again took place this weekend atop the second-tier KRU Championship, with Masinde Muliro climbing to the top of the log with a commanding 74-12 home win over the University of Eldoret Trojans in Kakamega.

The win saw Masinde Muliro claim pole position on 29 points, tied with second-placed Daystar Falcons but boasting a superior for/against aggregate of 143 compared to the Falcons’ 115. The Falcons also secured a big win, stopping Kabarak University 39-12 in Athi River.

The clash of the round took place on the Kenyan South Coast, at the Seacrest Gardens in the resort town of Diani. Hosts South Coast Pirates dug deep for a 26-18 victory over Impala. This win sees the Pirates in third place on 27 points, while Impala sits fourth on 23 points.

With three rounds of the regular season still to play, the quest for the two home semifinal slots is within reach for any one of these four teams.

Western Bulls and JKUAT Cougars occupy the remaining two playoff slots and they incidentally faced off this past weekend, with the Cougars getting the better of the Bulls with a 19-3 victory in Juja. Bulls stayed fifth on 14 points despite the loss, just one clear of Cougars who are on 13 points.

Kabarak University and the University of Eldoret Trojans occupy positions seven and eight, tied on 10 points, while USIU Martials overcame Mean Machine 18-15, a result that sees the Martials climb to ninth on 8 points. Meanwhile, Mombasa, inactive this weekend, sits tenth on 8 points while Machine returned to the relegation zone on 7 points.

There is only one fixture this weekend, the clash between UoE Trojans and USIU Martials rescheduled from January 6, a match that could heavily impact the race for playoff qualification.
