A kicking masterclass from Geoffrey Ominde saw Menengai Oilers end KCB’s reign as Kenya Cup champions in semifinal action at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka on Saturday 5 March 2022.
The Oilers flyhalf drilled home eight penalties to guide his side to their maiden Kenya Cup final with a 24-17 victory over the bankers.
He punished early infringements from the bankers, drilling home three first half penalties for a 9-0 lead before KCB’s Darwin Mukidza scored and converted his own try to cut the deficit to 9-7. Another Ominde penalty gave Oilers the 12-7 lead at the interval.
Vincent Onyala, on as a second half replacement for Max Kang’eri then went over for KCB’s second try, Mukidza converting as the bankers led for the only time in this fixture, 14-12 six minutes into the second half.
Ominde continued to punish KCB’s mistakes, adding two more penalties to make it 18-14 before Mukidza brought the bankers to within a point of a disciplined Oilers side, drilling home a home penalty for an 18-17 score.
KCB’s unforced errors saw them lose momentum every time they went forward, their indiscipline at the breakdown eventually costing them the game as Ominde drilled home two more penalties to secure the famous result for the upstarts from Nakuru.
They will face Kabras Sugar in next weekend’s final. Kabras defeated Strathmore Leos 29-9 at the Kakamega Showground.
