Kenya Harlequin drew first blood in the Ngong Road derby, running off with a 29-22 win over hosts Resolution Impala Saracens at the Impala club on Saturday 21 November 2015.
Captain Tony Mutai opened the scoring, touching down with Kevin Keegan converting for a 7-0 lead before George Okowa’s penalty for Impala brought the scores to 7-3.
The hosts would go ahead when Kevin Ochami and Eric Kerre both went over the chalk, Impala leading 13-7 but found themselves trailing when Keegan converted Mutai’s try before drilling home a penalty for a 17-13 lead at the interval.
The match remained close in the second half, Okowa stroking home a penalty to bring Impala to within a point of Quins before Kevin Kabue landed to extend the visitor’s lead to 22-16.
Two Okowa penalties off a series of Quins brought the sides level, 22-22 with the match destined for a frenetic conclusion.
Impala, with their tails up, were asking questions of Quins, only to cheaply lose possession and oblige the hawk-eyed William Mawira who pounced on the loose ball and raced to score with Johnstone Mung’au converting for a 29-22 lead that Quins held to the full time whistle.
The day’s earlier fixture saw Pan Africa Strathmore Leos plunder nine tries past Mean Machine, eventually winning this fixture 56-0.
Cyprian Kuto scored two tries with Ginton Adongo,John Okwara,Dan Othieno, Brian Nyikuli, Victor Odera, Churchill Ooko and John Oduk all going over the whitewash. Humphrey Owuor added three conversions with Paddy Owiti contributing a penalty and conversion against a Machine side that simply had no response to the Leos.
Elsewhere, champions KCB shut out league debutantes Thika RFC, posting a 62-0 shut out while Kabras Sugar and Top Fry Nakuru won big, Kabras beating Bungoma’s Kenya Sharks 87-3 with Nakuru registering an 86-0 result over Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad.
Mwamba edged Western Bulls 13-9 as Total Nondies were 20-12 winners over Menengai Cream Homeboyz.
