Kenyatta University Blak Blad ended Kenya Harlequins’ perfect start to the season with a 9-3 win in Kenya Cup match day six action at the Kenyatta University.

Dennis Gitau was Blak Blad’s hero, kicking over three penalties.

This match, under the supervision of Constant Cap, was always a close contest.

Blad would have an early stab at goal from a penalty attempt following a Quins infringement but Gitau’s kick was short.

He soon put the hosts ahead with another penalty goal off a Quins infringement, Blak Blad leading 3-0 before Quins replied through Amon Wamalwa’s penalty in a first half that saw Blad’s scrummaging posing a problem for the Quins front row.

Another Gitau penalty took the game to 6-3 at the break.

Head Coach Paul Murunga introduced Cornelius Mokoro and Laban Kipsang for Patrick Wainaina and Charles Orwa respectively as Quins took to the second half chasing the game and victory.

They grew in confidence, seeing more of the ball as they gained territory but were time and again let down by a series of unforced errors with every visit to the Blad 22.

Gitau’s third penalty took the score to 9-3, Blad doggedly defending but looking threatening every time they had ball in hand.

They would eventually hold out for the win that keeps their playoff hopes alive.

Mwamba and Catholic Monks claimed their first wins of the season, emerging victorious in their matches against Nondescripts and Homeboyz respectively.

Mwamba were 15-7 winners at the RFUEA against Nondies as Monks stopped Homeboyz 27-17 at the Jamhuri Park.

Menengai Oilers defeated Kisumu 48-7 at the Nakuru Showground while defending champions Kabras Sugar stayed top with a 88-3 victory over Strathmore Leos in Madaraka.

KCB were 20-12 winners away to Nakuru at the Nakuru Athletic Club.
